Night Photography
Here at Concept Studios, venturing out into the night to capture some great shots is no rare occurrence. Our #IntoTheNight photo series can be found here.
So, maybe you're in a creative rut and want to experiment in different elements and practice in new lighting scenarios? Or perhaps, your schedule during the day doesn't permit you to shoot until after-hours? Taking your talents to the darkness can be a refreshing experience!
Here's a round-up of tips to make your shoot go unhinged:
- In the winter months, don't let the weather stop you - obviously plan for the milder evenings and bundle up in some warm and comfortable gear. (read our Must Have Guide to assist with this)
- It's always a plus if you can find a dedicated model to get out and brave the elements for night portraits! When you do find these amazing souls, consider packing along some hot hands, a canteen of tea or blankets as a courtesy for their comfort (and yours)
- City and urban settings provide unlimited and amazing photo opportunities. Try pre-scouting the locations first, so you're not wandering aimlessly and so you stay on task; focused on a concentrated idea (although, in most scenarios, wandering aimlessly is always encouraged!)
- Bring a range of lenses - in some instances you'll want to get a wider shot and other situations will call for more detail. We like to shoot cohesive stories and one way we accomplish this is by getting multiple shots through different lenses. OR if you're looking for a challenge or to practice with one lens, consider giving yourself the option to shoot with just one focal length.
- Test out the flash - we've found success with adding external lighting options to our night shots. Depending on your photographic style of course, flash can nicely complement a landscape shot and is definitely a must for night portraiture. Use a portable flash to experiment different lighting styles and settings.
- If the occasion permits, bring a tripod and experiment with different shutter speeds and vantage points. (Read more about shutter speeds here). Night time is a unique chance to capture light against a dark backdrop, prepare to be "wowed" by these results.
- Safety - Go to a well lit area (our preference is to go where the neon is...) If you're shooting by your lonesome, make sure to stay in a public area. Avoid shooting in dark alleys, remote or otherwise uninhibited places, as to invite trouble. Take a careful observation of your surroundings and be aware of any "no photography allowed" signs and other various private property/trespassing warnings. Finally, know your rights when shooting in public places, use your best judgement and always protect your equipment!
